The Marrakech Natural History Museum (MHNM), affiliated with Cadi Ayyad University (UCA), is a research center dedicated to the conservation and study of biodiversity and Morocco’s natural heritage. It brings together researchers from UCA’s associated laboratories, focusing on topics related to biodiversity, geodiversity, conservation, and the enhancement of collections.
Through its research platforms and scientific expertise, the MHNM contributes to addressing environmental challenges while supporting national sustainable development strategies. It serves as a space for training and innovation, assisting students, researchers, and the general public in understanding and valuing natural resources.
The Museum is located at the ENCG, Boulevard Allal Al Fassi, Marrakech.
The Museum’s Missions
- To establish and preserve reference collections and databases on biodiversity (both current and past) and national natural heritage (current species, fossils, mineral and rock samples, photographs, etc.).
- To offer a scientific research platform to address current and future environmental challenges in the region and Morocco, in response to the Convention on Biological Diversity (CBD), the International Convention on Climate Change, and the Nagoya Protocol (genetic biodiversity benefits exchange).
- To support national and regional sustainable natural resource management programs and national strategies for sustainable development, including strategies for wetlands, forests, coastal areas, and the National Climate Plan.
- To become a center and hub of excellence and expertise in biodiversity, geodiversity, conservation, and ecosystem restoration.
- To oversee training through research (Bachelor’s, Master’s, PhD.) and transfer environmental information and technology through capacity-building programs for other audiences (NGOs, managers).
- To promote scientific and technical culture and ensure the dissemination of research findings from UCA researchers to a wide audience (students, decision-makers, NGOs, etc.).
